FXZS60 NSTU 060009 AFDPPG Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pago Pago AS 109 PM SST Tue May 5 2026 .Short term... Satellite imagery has shown decreasing clouds throughout the overnight hours and this morning as a trough begins to move away from American Samoa. A developing low pressure system to the east of Fiji is to bring the trough further to the south through Wednesday. The risk of rainfall continues to decrease. North/northwesterly winds remain in the forecast through tomorrow. Wind speeds are forecast to increase tonight and early Wednesday to reach up to 15 mph, but up to 20 mph along the higher elevations and the Pago Pago Harbor region. As the aforementioned low pressure system strengthens as it moves further away from the area, the trough will move further away as well. This is forecast to decrease winds to light and varable for Wednesday night through Friday morning. If showers develop, rainfall is not expected to be heavy enough to cause flash flooding. Otherwise, a mix of sun and clouds are anticipated with temperatures slightly above average. .Long term... For the weekend, a weak ridge of high pressure from the southwest moves over the islands. This is forecast to generate a east/southeasterly tradewinds reaching up to around 15 mph. This is expected to give below average rainfall and above average temperatures. Confidence is high that severe weather is not anticipated for the weekend and into early next week. && .Marine... Seas remain more elevated than expected this morning and early this afternoon. The PacIOOS buoy recorded seas remaining just below 10 feet throughout the morning, which prompted the High Surf Advisory to be posted through the overnight hours as the strength of the south swell remains high enough to maintain surf within the High Surf Advisory levels along the southern shores. Seas remain rough due to the swell combined with the northwesterly wind waves. The strength of the southerly swell is forecast to decrease throughout the overnight hours to produce surf below advisory levels. Northwesterly winds are to also slowly decrease throughout the day. This will lead to easing seas throughout the American Samoa coastal waters during the day Wednesday and ideal conditions are forecast through the rest of the week as winds become light and variable along with southerly swell not being as strong compared to today. && .PPG WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... A High Surf Advisory remains in effect through Wednesday morning. A Small Craft Advisory remains in effect. && $$ LaPlante
