FXUS65 KVEF 251102 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 402 AM PDT Sat Oct 25 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Gusty southwest winds expected across the region today and Sunday as a trough digs through the southern Great Basin. * Dry conditions and near-normal temperatures expected through the forecast period. && .DISCUSSION...Today through Friday. A deep trough associated with a closed low over the Gulf of Alaska will push through the western CONUS this weekend, bringing along with a 115-125 kt 250mb jet streak. The resulting cross-barrier flow will cause gusty west winds to the Sierra Crest today and Sunday, with downslope potential into the Owens Valley. Chances of 40 mph wind gusts crossing Highway 395 near Bishop are around 20 percent this afternoon and 20-30 percent on Sunday. The other area of concern is the western Mojave Desert including western San Bernardino County, where there is a 20 percent chance of gusty west winds in excess of 40 mph tonight and 20-30 percent Sunday (greater chances in the higher terrain). Elsewhere, expect gusty south- southwest winds on this weekend between 20 and 30 mph. Otherwise, expect near-normal temperatures and no chance of precipitation this weekend and through next week. With the passage of the aforementioned trough, a dry northwesterly flow will set up aloft for the work week. Expect occasional shortwave passages along this flow, which will increase afternoon breeziness, particularly along the Colorado River Valley, so boaters are urged to check the forecast before heading out on area lakes. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 12Z Forecast Package...Light winds of 8 knots or less, following typical diurnal directional patterns, are expected into the early afternoon.
