FXUS65 KVEF 240747 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 1247 AM PDT Fri Oct 24 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Gusty west winds expected across the region this weekend as a weather system pushes into the Pacific Northwest. * Dry conditions, temperatures near-normal, and mostly clear skies expected through the forecast period. && .DISCUSSION...Today through Thursday. This weekend, a deep trough associated with a closed low over the Gulf of Alaska will push into the Pacific Northwest. As this occurs, the modest ridging over the Desert Southwest will deamplify, resulting in a quasi-zonal flow aloft. The trough axis will push through the southern Great Basin early Saturday, followed by the passage of a 115 kt 250mb jet streak. The cross-barrier flow will result in gusty west winds on the Sierra Crest, with downslope potential into the Owens Valley. Chances of 40 mph wind gusts crossing Highway 395 near Bishop are around 20 percent on Saturday. The other area of concern is the western Mojave Desert including western San Bernardino County, where there is a 20 percent chance of gusty west winds in excess of 40 mph Saturday night. Elsewhere, expect gusty south-southwest winds on Saturday between 20 and 30 mph, with stronger speeds in the higher terrain. Breeziness will continue through Sunday as the trough lifts northward. In addition to the aforementioned gusty winds, this weekend's weather will be characterized by temperatures near-normal and no chance of precipitation. Seasonal temperatures and dry conditions continue into the next work week, as the zonal flow aloft transitions into a dry northwest flow due to a growing area of high pressure over the southeastern Pacific Ocean. As is common this time of year with northwest flows aloft, we can expect occasional shortwave passages along the flow, which will increase afternoon breeziness, particularly along the Colorado River Valley, so boaters are urged to check the forecast before heading out on area lakes. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Light winds follow typical wind patterns are expected through Friday night.
