FXUS65 KVEF 190448 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 948 PM PDT Wed Mar 18 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Heat is the story for the upcoming week as Extreme Heat Warnings go into effect for the Mojave Desert effective through the weekend. && .DISCUSSION...Today through Tuesday. No significant changes to the 7 day forecast with heat continuing to build over the western US. All-time March records are pretty much guaranteed to fall, and forecast values during the peak of the heatwave are close to all-time April records. While temperatures often exceed the currently forecast highs during the summer months, these temperatures could cause potential hazards to anyone with outdoor interests. Our bodies are not acclimatized to these temperatures so early in the season and many visiting recreationists will be unprepared as well. Extreme Heat Warnings are in effect for the Mojave Desert through Sunday, with Heat Advisories in effect for the Owens Valley and southern Great Basin through Saturday. By late weekend and early next week, models show a weak shortwave moving through, bringing temperatures down slightly. However, the trend for next week as been towards a stronger ridge, favoring a continuation of temperatures well above normal. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 06Z Forecast Package...Light winds favoring diurnal directions expected through the TAF period.
