FXUS65 KSLC 070928 AFDSLC Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Salt Lake City UT 328 AM MDT Mon Apr 7 2025 .SYNOPSIS...High pressure will result in warm and dry conditions today. A weak storm system will graze northern Utah later today into Tuesday. Strong high pressure will build in again afterwards, continuing into the weekend. && .SHORT TERM (THROUGH 12Z WEDNESDAY)...An upper ridge continues to build into Utah this morning while upstream, a trough is noted over the West Coast. The ridge axis is expected to shift overhead by around sunrise, while the upstream trough gradually weakens as it progresses inland. The ridge is essentially just expected to end up flattening as the trough grazes northern Utah this evening and overnight. Ahead of the the trough today, west to southwest flow will increase across the area. This will lead to increased mixing, which when combined with the warm airmass associated with the high pressure, will lead to warm temperatures today. Afternoon maxes are expected to be around 5-10 degrees warmer than yesterday, which would be around 5-10 degrees above normal for this time of year. The trough will push a weak cold front into northern Utah tonight, resulting in a very slight cooling trend for Tuesday, even as temperatures across southern Utah will continue to warm. Precipitation is expected to be minimal with the cold front, given weak dynamics and dry low levels. At best, there may be some sprinkles or very high elevation snow near the Idaho border. The HREF peaks in the Bear River Range with a 30% chance of precipitation of 0.05 inches or greater. .LONG TERM (After 12z/6 AM Wednesday)...The extended forecast begins with a gradual warm-up and continued dry conditions areawide as a ridge amplifies over the western US through the end of the work week. Temperatures soar well above average during this period, peaking upwards of 15-20 degrees above average on Friday. This translates to temperatures in the upper-70s to low-80s for most valley locations, and low-90s for lower Washington county. The first 80+ degree day of the year is looking likely for Salt Lake City, with current guidance suggesting a greater than 95% chance for a high of 80 degrees or higher on Friday. Ensembles continue to support a signal for a troughing pattern to return this upcoming weekend, though still quite a bit of variability in the magnitude. Regardless, we are looking at some flavor of a cooling trend into early next week. Current guidance shows quite the spread in temperatures come Sunday, especially across northern Utah, where some locations show a 20 degree spread between the 25th and 75th percentile. Depending on the placement and magnitude of the trough, we could also see some increased winds and precipitation chances Sunday into early next week. && .AVIATION...KSLC...Overall VFR conditions expected to continue through the TAF period. Mid-to-high level cloud coverage increases after 18z today as a weak upper-level wave brushes the region, but otherwise conditions remain dry. Light southeasterly winds increase out of the south after roughly 18z, again becoming more light and southeasterly after 03z Tuesday. .REST OF UTAH AND SOUTHWEST WYOMING...VFR conditions to prevail across the forecast area through the TAF period. A weak wave brushing northern Utah brings increasing mid-to-high level clouds this afternoon, with dry conditions prevailing outside of the potential for light showers in the vicinity of KLGU. Generally light and terrain driven winds prevail through the morning, trending more southerly for all regional terminals this afternoon and evening. && .SLC WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... UT...None.
