FXUS65 KREV 210908 AFDREV Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Reno NV 208 AM PDT Sat Mar 21 2026 .KEY MESSAGES... * Breezy winds this afternoon will increase the potential for recreation and travel impacts in NE California and far NW Nevada. * Warmer than normal temperatures continue through next week with increased afternoon winds Monday through Wednesday. * Dry weather remains favored for the final week of March with hints of wetter weather during the first week of April. && .DISCUSSION... This weekend will feature cooler, albeit still warmer than normal, temperatures as transient low pressure dampens our abnormally strong ridging pattern. Winds will become breezy this afternoon in response to the passing low and an attendant cold frontal passage with W/NW gusts reaching 25-35 mph across NE California and far NW Nevada. These winds will induce choppy waters and hazardous boating conditions on Pyramid Lake, and Rye Patch and Lahontan reservoirs, as well as bumpy flights this afternoon. High pressure makes a brief reappearance on Monday and Tuesday -- warming temperatures back to record levels -- before shifting eastward by midweek. This will allow a belt of stronger W-SW flow to nudge southward into the region, resulting in breezy afternoons and renewed wind impacts to recreation and travel Monday through Wednesday. Otherwise, next week will continue to be warmer than normal with dry conditions favored through March. There are hints of wetter weather during the first week of April, but time will tell if this signal holds as we round out the month. -Salas && .AVIATION... Lower-end LLWS and mountain wave turbulence impacts will be the main concern today as winds increase ahead of an approaching cold front. W/NW gusts of 20-30 kts will be common at regional terminals this afternoon, particularly between 19Z and 02Z. Winds will veer to NW-N at KRNO-KCXP-KMEV once the cold front moves through between 01-03Z. Otherwise, VFR conditions continue through the weekend and into next week with breezy winds returning each afternoon early next week. -Salas && .CLIMATE... * Monthly record set at Reno: - Reno, NV: New record of 88F.
