(This evening through Saturday) Issued at 137 PM CDT Fri Mar 20 2026 Afternoon water vapor imagery shows the center of a broad upper level ridge spinning over the Desert Southwest. This will be the primary synoptic feature influencing our weather through the weekend. In addition, the low level thermal ridge is forecast to expand eastward and strengthen across our area on Saturday. High temperatures are forecast to surge well into the mid 90s to near 100 degrees across the Big Country and Concho Valley where 850 mb temperatures will be the highest. The record high for March for both Abilene and San Angelo (98 degrees for both sites) could very well be tied or broken on Saturday. Elsewhere, highs will be in the mid 90s. Overnight lows will dip down into the 50s. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday night through next Friday) Issued at 137 PM CDT Fri Mar 20 2026 Expect record heat across west central Texas this weekend as a large dome of high pressure will expand across the southwest US into the Southern Plains. The 500 MB heights will be between 595 to 600 across the southwest US. Also, a low level thermal ridge will extend across northwest Texas into the Big Country with highs around 100 Saturday and Sunday. The rest of the area will see highs in the 90s. The monthly record high of 98 at Abilene and San Angelo for March will probably be broken. Please follow heat safety precautions if you plan to be outside for an extended period of time.
