FXUS64 KSJT 200620 AFDSJT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service San Angelo TX 120 AM CDT Fri Mar 20 2026 ...New SHORT TERM... .KEY MESSAGES... - Record high temperatures will likely be tied or broken today through Sunday. - Elevated to near critical fire weather conditions possible on Saturday and Sunday due to dry fuels and hot temperatures. && .SHORT TERM... (Today and tonight) Issued at 118 AM CDT Fri Mar 20 2026 A large upper level ridge centered across Arizona will dominate the weather across West Central Texas through the next 24 hours. Highs today will be 20 to 25 degrees above normal, in the mid to upper 90s for most locations. AFternoon highs were bumped up slightly from the NBM numbers. The record highs for today (March 20th) are 91 at San Angelo and 94 at Abilene. Both of these records will likely be broken today. South winds will increase to 10 to 15 mph, with some higher gusts, by late morning, then decrease by late afternoon or early evening. Overnight lows will be around 15 degrees above seasonal normals, in the mid 50s to lower 60s. && .LONG TERM... (Saturday through Thursday) Issued at 1222 AM CDT Fri Mar 20 2026 Nothing has changed with the record breaking temperatures for the weekend across West Central Texas. Upper level ridge building into the area along with a low level thermal ridge, with at least a few hours of southwest winds providing a couple extra degree boost of downslope flow. As mentioned more than once, 98 degrees is the record for hottest temperature so early in the year and this may well fall. Hottest temperatures may actually be across the northwest Big Country closer to the center of the thermal ridge and temperatures exceeding 100 degrees is likely in some locations. Just as a note, although these types of temperatures don't reach heat criteria for the area, this type of heat in March before people and animals have had any real chance to acclimate to the hotter conditions is a real concern. People are used to 100 degrees in July and August, not so much in March. Forecast highs will approach 30 degrees above normal and people/pets/livestock may struggle with this. Cold front slides under the ridge and brings some cooler conditions for Monday, but again not even getting temperatures back down to normal in many areas. Upper ridge isn't going anywhere however and highs by mid week will be right back in the mid/upper 90s once again. WPC 6-10 day forecast for next week shows well above normal temperatures covering much of the western half of the country underneath the ridge. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1144 PM CDT Thu Mar 19 2026 VFR conditions will prevail through the next 24 hours. South to southwest winds will increase to 10 to 12 knots, with higher gusts, by late morning Friday, then decrease by late afternoon or early evening. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
