Updated at 1241 AM CDT Wed May 6 2026 - Warm and breezy conditions continue into Wednesday, with strong gap winds possible in the Guadalupe Mountains Wednesday night behind a cold front. - The cold front brings cooler temperatures Thursday. Warmer conditions return for the weekend. && .SHORT TERM... (This afternoon through Wednesday night) Issued at 210 PM CDT Tue May 5 2026 As expected, wind gusts are picking up across southeast New Mexico where Wind Advisories and a High Wind Warning are currently in effect through early this evening. Will leave these products as inherited for the afternoon forecast package. Winds decrease this evening across the area with some gusts still seen across the higher elevations. Continued westerly to southwesterly flow and thick, high cloud cover will keep temperatures above normal with most in the 60s and some in the upper 50s. The upper level disturbance bringing the breezy conditions will move closer and winds increase once again mainly across the higher elevations and adjacent foothills in the western half of the CWA on Wednesday. Highs reach near normal in the mid 80s as cloud cover keeps it cooler than today. A cold front approaches late Wednesday evening and pushes across the region. (Thursday through Monday) Issued at 210 PM CDT Tue May 5 2026 A cold front continues to sweep southward Thursday morning, with surface high pressure setting in behind the front. Breezy northeast winds in the morning settle down by the afternoon. Highs Thursday generally top out in the 70s, with upper 60s in the higher elevations and 80s near the Rio Grande. Thursday into Friday night, an upper low swings across our area. Despite lift associated with this system, moisture looks scant. Our easternmost counties will have low (10-20%) rain chances Thursday, with lower chances Thursday evening. Lows Thursday night fall into the mid 40s to 50s. Southwesterly winds return Friday, promoting highs in the 80s. Temperatures warm further Saturday, in the 90s for most, as heights increase and lee troughing develops. Another cold front begins to drop down through our region Sunday, driven by a surface high over the Plains. The boundary may stall over the vicinity of the northeastern Basin Wednesday, while winds turn westerly and increase to around 15-20 knots with a few gusts over 25 knots over most area terminals late Wednesday morning into Wednesday afternoon.
