FXUS64 KEWX 211105 CCA AFDEWX Area Forecast Discussion...CORRECTED National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX 605 AM CDT Sat Mar 21 2026 ...New AVIATION... .KEY MESSAGES... - Well above average high temperatures through the middle of next week with record highs possible today and Sunday. - Elevated fire weather conditions possible most days due to low minimum humidities. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Sunday) Issued at 1224 AM CDT Sat Mar 21 2026 An anomalously strong mid to upper level high remains over the southwestern US tonight. The boundary layer flow is from the south to southeast. The airmass in place is warm with temperatures in the 70s while dewpoints have increased 5-10 degrees over the past 24 hours and range from the lower 40s to 60. We don't expect any significant change in the pattern during the short term period. The upper high will begin to flatten today, but that will strengthen the ridge over TX and allow temperatures to warm. High temperatures today and Sunday will threaten record levels with highs in the 90s and near 100 along the Rio Grande both days. The blended model guidance looks to be a little cool again, and we have adjusted highs up a couple of degrees today and Sunday. && .LONG TERM... (Sunday night through Friday) Issued at 1224 AM CDT Sat Mar 21 2026 With the flattening of the upper ridge, a weak cold front will move down through north TX Sunday night. This front will likely stall over central TX before moving into our CWA. While we will remain in the warm sector, there should be some reduction in temperatures as the winds back a little to the southeast. The result will be highs in the upper 80s and lower 90s Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday and Thursday we will creep back up another few degrees. Friday the winds will shift to the east and southeast which will drop temperatures again into the 80s and lower 90s. There is no chance for rain in the forecast next week. && .AVIATION... (12Z TAFS) Issued at 535 AM CDT Sat Mar 21 2026 High amplitude ridging over the SW CONUS and TX will maintain a light to moderate southerly breeze that mixes with some more westerly flow off the plateau in the late morning. This has limited low cloud production and should continue to do so this weekend. We'll show no low clouds in our TAFs, but there is a few higher resolution model runs that hold on to some low CIGs right at daybreak. As of 530 AM, the low clouds were all focusing along and east of Hwy 77. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 1224 AM CDT Sat Mar 21 2026 Dry air will remain over South-Central Texas through at least Monday. As temperatures soar, relative humidity will drop. Minimum RH today and Sunday will drop below 30% over most of the area and below 20% over the area west of I-35/I-37. Winds during the time of lowest RH will generally be 10 mph or less and this may lead to elevated fire weather conditions. Slightly breezier conditions Sunday may support near-critical fire weather conditions. A shift in the low level winds to the southeast will bring slightly higher dewpoint air and along with temperatures a few degrees cooler will allow RH to stay above 20% nearly everywhere and above 30% east of Hwy 281 for the first part of next week. Winds should remain light. && .CLIMATE...
