FXUS64 KEWX 190530 AFDEWX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX 1230 AM CDT Thu Mar 19 2026 ...New SHORT TERM, LONG TERM, AVIATION, FIRE WEATHER, CLIMATE... .KEY MESSAGES... - Well above average high temperatures through the middle of next week with record highs possible Friday through Sunday. - Elevated fire weather conditions possible most days due to low minimum humidities across portions of South Central Texas. && .SHORT TERM... (Today through Friday) Issued at 1225 AM CDT Thu Mar 19 2026 A moist lower level airmass on southerly flow brings areas of low clouds and patchy fog to many areas early this morning, then the flow turns more southwesterly tonight keeping the low clouds and patchy fog mainly east of I-35 Friday morning. Mixing will clear out the low clouds and fog by mid morning each day. A mid level ridge centered over Arizona expands to over Texas by Friday. Mixing with the warming temperatures aloft due to the ridge expansion maintains the warming trend with highs around the records Friday. See CLIMATE section below for details. Subsidence underneath the ridge and below seasonal average moisture levels keep rain out of the forecast. Local fire weather issues persist in the short term and continue into the long term. See FIRE WEATHER section below for details. && .LONG TERM... (Friday night through Wednesday) Issued at 1225 AM CDT Thu Mar 19 2026 The mid level ridge continues to build over Texas this weekend. Mixing with the unseasonably warm and dry mid levels maintains high temperatures around record levels Saturday and Sunday. See CLIMATE section below for details. The mid level ridge weakens and retreats to the west allowing a brief cold frontal incursion early next week. As a result, high temperatures back off from record levels, though remain well above average. High temperatures warm again mid week ahead of a late week cold front. Although, high temperatures remain well above average, low temperatures are only slightly above average. Similar to the short term, no rain is expected through middle of next week. The late week cold front likely brings below average temperatures and possibly a few showers. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 1225 AM CDT Thu Mar 19 2026 Mostly VFR skies are expected through the next 24-30 hours. Some pockets of IFR cigs and patchy fog are expected to form at daybreak mainly around SAT/AUS and adjacent areas of the Hill Country. The layer should be quite shallow, so if the saturation occurs at all, it should burn off quickly in the mid morning hours. && .FIRE WEATHER... Issued at 1131 PM CDT Wed Mar 18 2026 Mixing with warm/dry mid level air maintains minimum humidities in the teens and 20s through the forecast with teens across many areas on Friday through Sunday and along the Rio Grande next week. On most days, winds will be light at 10 mph or less with only elevated fire weather conditions possible. Wind speeds increase to 10 to 15 mph with gusts to 20 to 25 mph across many areas on Sunday and with the lowest minimum humidities on that day, near critical fire weather conditions are possible. Overnight recovery of humidities will mainly be good through the period, especially from portions of the the Hill Country across the I-35 corridor to the Coastal Plains with poor to moderate across the Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande Plains, at times. && .CLIMATE...
