FXUS64 KEWX 060010 AFDEWX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Austin/San Antonio TX 710 PM CDT Sat Apr 5 2025 ...New AVIATION... .SHORT TERM... (Tonight through Sunday night) Issued at 118 PM CDT Sat Apr 5 2025 Key Messages: - Cool and brisk conditions with gusty north to northwest winds will bring a temporary hold on spring tonight and Sunday, followed by clear, calm, and cold conditions Sunday night. The upper level jet stream is about to drift east of our area, while a south to north moving jet streak exits toward Arkansas. A longwave trough centered near El Paso will continue to slowly move east, with the main result being some mid-level lift over the Rio Grande Plains and Edwards Plateau this evening. Meanwhile, isentropic upglide over the cold airmass now in place will maintain cloud skies for most of the area, but also aid in low-level lift over the Edwards Plateau and Rio Grande Plains, with light showers expected there this evening. Otherwise, the main story of the short term will be strong north to northwest winds of 15 to 30 mph, with some gusts in the Hill Country possibly approaching 40 mph this evening and overnight. While the winds will drop a little on Sunday, morning lows in the mid 30s to mid 40s, and highs only in the upper 50s to lower 60s, will make for pretty raw conditions. High pressure will continue to build in and the longwave trough axis will move east, resulting in clearing skies and light winds Sunday night. Strong radiational cooling will allow overnight lows to range from the lower 30s north to near 40 south. A few spots in the Hill Country will see a few hours of near 32F temps and possibly a light freeze. && .LONG TERM... (Monday through Saturday) Issued at 118 PM CDT Sat Apr 5 2025 Key Messages: - Warming trend to above average by late next week A quiet upper level pattern with a northwesterly flow establishes across the region as the troughing pattern slides eastward and an upper level ridge builds over the Desert Southwest. A continued northerly low- level and surface flow will result in Monday as the coolest day within the long term. The winds shift southerly into Tuesday morning and remain through midweek. The winds will remain generally light and this should help to keep the local moisture advection as a slow and gradual process into and through the midweek. Temperatures will climb day by day with afternoon highs reaching up into the mid 80s to mid 90s by late week. A front may arrive into early Friday as a trough digs into the southeastern CONUS. This may bring a brief wind shift out of the northeast, otherwise no impacts are expected. Next week will offer plentiful sunshine with tolerable humidity levels across the region. The relative humidity levels along the Rio Grande could fall below 20 percent most afternoons but fire weather conditions are likely to remain elevated at most given the light winds. && .AVIATION... (00Z TAFS) Issued at 704 PM CDT Sat Apr 5 2025 The ceiling at SSF is just barely VFR, and we expect it to fall into MVFR in the next hour or two. Strong winds will occasionally gust to 30 knots overnight, and that could include at any of the TAF sites. The weakest sustained winds should be at DRT and SSF with slightly higher winds to impact SAT/AUS. The gusts to 30 knots may go away for a few hours around daybreak and then kick back up through at least 18Z. Skies lifting to VFR should occur by late morning, but AUS may see lower cigs for about half the afternoon. Most of the gusts should be gone by 02Z Monday. && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMPS/POPS...
