FXUS63 KDMX 070706 AFDDMX Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Des Moines IA 206 AM CDT Mon Apr 7 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... - Cool and breezy today with temperatures warming through the end of the week - Spotty light rain chances (25-45%) Wednesday-Thursday && .DISCUSSION... Issued at 206 AM CDT Mon Apr 7 2025 A training cold front is pushing across Iowa early this morning, associated with a deeper shortwave across the Great Lakes region. While the subsidence will keep skies clear today, do not be deceived by the sunshine. Cold air advection will keep afternoon highs in the 40s across the area, accompanied by northwest winds gusting 20-25+ mph. This will result in wind chills in the 30s, about 10 degrees cooler than the air temperature. This trough continues plodding east on Tuesday with return southerly flow sending temperatures back to the 50s. This will kick off a warming trend with low 60s through the end of the week. A strengthening thermal ridge reaches the area by the weekend with 70s making a return. The primary precipitation window will arrive in the overnight to early Wednesday morning hours as low pressure deepens across the central plains and into Iowa. Soundings continue to depict a battle with dry air as columns struggle to saturate. This will result in rather spotty light rain chances through Wednesday. Better precipitation chances across eastern Iowa as the low continues to mature as it exits the area. A reinforcing area of forcing drops across the area into Thursday, however dry air will remain a challenge and precipitation is again anticipated to remain light and scattered. The GFS remains more aggressive than the Euro in terms of QPF across the area, though even those amounts are fairly light. Next window for precipitation looks to arrive early next week, but at this range model solutions contain significant differences. && .AVIATION /06Z TAFS THROUGH 06Z TUESDAY/...
