With the departure of the intense cyclone responsible for dumping more than a foot of heavy snow that is rarely seen near the coast of North Carolina, arctic air remains engulfing much of the eastern U.S., the South, and especially Florida. This has resulted in an extremely rare situation in which it is colder across the Sunshine State than over Montana in the depth of winter. Extreme Cold/Freeze Warnings remain in effect early this morning across much of Florida into southern Georgia/Alabama, portions of the Carolinas and southeastern Louisiana. A gradual warming trend is expected to bring milder than normal temperatures into the Southeast on Tuesday However, temperatures will remain below normal for early February over the Florida Peninsula while a reinforcing surge of arctic air will move into the Great Lakes toward the Ohio Valley Tuesday into Wednesday morning. Meanwhile, much of the western U.S. will remain quiet weatherwise with above normal temperatures. The exception will be over the Pacific Northwest where rain from the next Pacific system arrives today before tapering off tonight. A series of Alberta clippers will form downstream and bring periods of light snow or wintry mix across the Northern Plains for the next couple of days. Light snow will also be found across the Great Lakes today in association with the lead clipper system followed by the arrival of an arctic front on Tuesday. Meanwhile, the northern High Plains with see increasingly above normal warmth due to clearing skies and downslope winds as the clippers track farther to the east. A weak jet stream wave, will track across the Rockies and trigger the formation of a frontal wave across the Southern High Plains late today. This will help to draw moisture from the Gulf toward the Arklatex region on Tuesday with increasing chance of showers and possibly embedded thunderstorms. By Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, the frontal wave is forecast to track northeast toward the Mid-Atlantic region to meet with an reinforcing surge of arctic air from the Great Lakes. This should help develop an area of light snow across the Ohio Valley later on Tuesday, across the central Appalachians by Tuesday evening, reaching into the Mid-Atlantic Tuesday night, and beginning to move off the Mid-Atlantic coast early on Wednesday. Meanwhile, showers and possibly embedded thunderstorms should be moving across the South and into the Southeast into Wednesday morning.
